Did You Say Fabrics? My First Love

Did You Say Fabrics? My First Love

Ah, fabrics — my first love. The hand, the texture, the saturation… how do I love thee? I can’t get enough. The moment fabrics come together, I instantly begin designing a room in my head. That “aha” moment can happen anywhere — driving, running, cooking, relaxing, drafting (you get the drift). It usually comes when I’m calm and in a positive space. That’s when the creative juices really start to flow.

Fabrics are where interior design begins for me. They set the tone, the palette, and the personality of a space.

Texture, Tone, and the Perfect Hand

When it comes to interior design fabrics, I lean toward texture — but not the fuzzy kind. I love flat, refined weaves that have depth without being overwhelming. Hand-blocked prints make my heart sing, especially those with a “dirty” palette — not too bright, not too pastel. Think earthy, autumnal tones that are easy on the eyes and even easier to live with.

Natural Fabrics: Beauty That Lasts

My heart has always belonged to natural fabrics — linen, wool, silk, and cotton (or beautiful blends of these). They’re timeless, sustainable, and eco-friendly — and they take dye in the most artful way. There’s a depth and honesty to their color that synthetic fabrics just can’t replicate.

In an age of man-made “performance” textiles, I still believe nature outperforms the lab. The look, the feel, the way light plays across the fibers — it’s design poetry.

The Art of Fabric Design

I’ve always dreamed of creating my own fabric collection — and who knows, maybe it’s still on the horizon. With today’s digital design and printing techniques, the possibilities are endless. But what truly inspires me are the ancient methods that remain alive and well: hand blocking, batik, and dyeing techniques that create beautiful ombré colorations. (Thank you, Rosemary Hallgarten, for continuing to inspire us all.)

These traditions remind me that the world of textiles is both boundless and deeply rooted in craftsmanship.

The Joy of Endless Possibilities

So many fabrics, so many colors… so little time. The possibilities truly are endless. What a privilege it is to work in this realm every day — to dream, to touch, to see material come alive in space.

I’ll admit it proudly: I’m a Fabric Hound. Always have been, always will be. 🐾
