Built Around a Light: A New Home Finds Its Tone

Every new build starts with a hundred decisions, and most of them wait politely for one another. This one did not. Our clients fell for a single island fixture, sculptural, quietly theatrical, and once it was chosen the rest of the house had something to answer to.

That is a better starting point than it sounds. A room designed around a piece someone genuinely loves will always feel more like them than a room assembled from a palette board. The question was simply what else belonged in the same conversation.

The family were uncertain about committing to a colour, which is a reasonable place to hesitate in a house with this much daylight. We guided them toward a greige palette, warm enough to soften the architecture and quiet enough to let the light do the work rather than compete with it. The subway tile was drawn from the same tone, so the kitchen reads as one considered surface instead of a set of separate decisions made on separate days.

The dining room holds the most personal thing in the house. The fixture above the table was a gift to our client from her mother, and we sized and configured the room around it so that it sits as though it had always belonged there. Beneath it, a table made for the family by a local artist, one of a kind and unlikely to be repeated.

Elsewhere, the playroom was allowed to be exactly what it is. Polka dots, soft green, low furniture at the right height for the people who actually use it. Not every room in a home needs to be restrained.

The house has grown into itself since. The family have been adding to their art collection ever since we handed it over, which is the quiet compliment every designer hopes for.

“One fixture set the tone, and the house followed it home.”
