A Second Home, and the Freedom of Leaving Things Alone

Our clients were moving into a second home to be nearer family, and they arrived with something unusual: contentment. The finishes were already chosen. They liked them. Nothing needed rescuing.

What they wanted was everything that comes after. A scheme that worked with what was already there rather than against it, comfortable enough to settle into on the first evening, and simple enough that looking after it would never become a chore. A house for being in, not for maintaining.

Restraint is harder than it looks. When a project does not need saving, the temptation is to intervene anyway, and the discipline is in knowing where to stop. We worked in warm greys and soft neutrals, letting the existing timber floors and stonework set the temperature, then layered in the things that make a room feel lived in rather than finished.

Texture carries most of the weight here. Sheepskin under a console, birch branches against a pale wall, a single orange lamp doing more than a whole scheme of colour would have. The art was chosen to hold the eye at the far end of a long open space, so the rooms read as one home rather than three areas that happen to adjoin.

The kitchen needed only its island reconsidered, and patterned counter stools were enough to give it a point of view without raising its voice.

The result was a home that asked nothing of them. They could arrive, put their bags down, and be somewhere that already felt like theirs. We have since worked with the same clients on three further houses, which is the only endorsement that really counts.
